PULSE The Magazine
of Mount Dora, Eustis and Tavares
Mari Henninger wrote our feature story for the Summer Issue 2010. After she discovered that this July was the 30th year since Mount Dora was painted pink for the movie, Pulse couldn't resist a story detailing the event and the people behind the event.
Mari spent hours in research pouring through files collected by the Mount Dora Historical Society and the WT Bland Library. In addition, she talked with a number local people who had a part as an extra, or a "hand" in the movie production. Photos of the painting and filming activity were uncovered and are posted on the site also.
Mari did an excellent job answering the questions concerning the release, or non-release, of the film and the resulting negative impact on John Schlesinger's directorial film career. She pulled together previously unpublished information about the time and the event when Mount Dora went "Hollywood."
Each year, the library holds a film fest and shows Honky Tonk Freeway. The event pulls together many of the towns people who were selected as extras for the film as well as newcomers to town who have heard the "Honky Tonk Talk," but have not seen the movie.

Originally known as the Elfin River, its main channel is a scant 1.25 miles of natural waterway connecting Lake Dora to Lake Eustis...
